Do I need planning permission for an outdoor sauna?

In most cases, outdoor saunas are classed as outbuildings and fall under permitted development, meaning you will not need planning permission. However, specific rules apply regarding the height of the building and its distance from your property boundary. We recommend checking with your local council if you live in a conservation area or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

What kind of base or foundation is required?

A solid, level foundation is vital to ensure the structural integrity of your sauna. A concrete pad, paving slabs, or a heavy-duty timber deck are all excellent choices. The base must be perfectly level to allow the door to align correctly and to ensure efficient drainage away from the cedar wood.

What are the power requirements for an electric sauna heater?

Most of our outdoor saunas require a dedicated 230V hardwired connection. Depending on the kilowatt rating of your chosen heater, you will likely need a 32-amp or 40-amp supply. This work must be carried out by a Part P qualified electrician to ensure your installation meets UK building regulations and safety standards.

How much maintenance does a cedar sauna require?

Canadian Cedar is incredibly low-maintenance due to its natural oils. You can choose to leave the exterior to weather naturally into a silver-grey patina, or apply a UV-inhibiting stain to maintain the original warm hues. For the interior, a simple wipe down and occasional scrubbing of the benches with a mild soap is all that is needed to keep the wood pristine.

How long does it take for the sauna to reach temperature?

Typically, your sauna will be ready for use within 30 to 60 minutes. This timing depends on the external temperature and whether you have opted for a wood-burning or electric heater. Because our Canadian staves are exceptionally thick, they retain heat far more efficiently than thinner, budget alternatives found on the market.

Can I use my sauna throughout the British winter?

Yes, our saunas are specifically engineered for the harsh Canadian climate, making them more than capable of handling a UK winter. The thermal mass of the solid cedar walls provides superior insulation, allowing you to enjoy a consistent, intense heat even when there is frost or snow on the ground outside.
